There are certain stories that stay with you—not because they are grand or dramatic, but because they quietly remind you what sacrifice really looks like.
During World War II, a young Marine named Jacklyn H. Lucas enlisted at just 14 years old by falsifying his age. By 17, he found himself in the fierce fighting on Iwo Jima.
In the midst of battle, two grenades landed in the trench where he and three other Marines had taken cover. Without hesitation, Lucas threw himself onto the grenades, absorbing the blast and saving the lives of the men beside him. His actions were later described as “unhesitating,” reflecting extraordinary courage in a moment that left no time for anything but instinct.
When reflecting on acts like these, the explanation is often simple: to protect those standing beside you—to save your buddies.
That kind of courage is difficult to fully comprehend. It’s not about recognition or reward—it’s about a deep sense of duty to something greater than oneself.
Memorial Day is a time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, but it’s also a moment to reflect on the freedoms we live with every day because of them. The ability to gather with family, to build a future, and to plan ahead with confidence are privileges made possible by their service.
At Lighthouse Capital Planners, we’re grateful to play a role in helping you protect and grow what matters most. And on this Memorial Day, we’re reminded that behind every plan, every goal, and every milestone is the freedom to pursue them.
We hope you take a moment this weekend to reflect, to remember, and to spend time with those you care about most.
Wishing you and your family a meaningful Memorial Day.
Sincerely,
Jared and The Team at Lighthouse Capital Planners
